According to the U.S. Department of Labor, New York City was the 1st to celebrate "Labor Day" in 1882. Then, in 1894, Congress passed an act making the 1st Monday of September a national holiday "dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers." The holiday pays tribute to those who have been instrumental in our nations strength, prosperity and well-being. It is our honor to introduce our listeners to Rebecca Townsend. Her exemplary labors of love have directly contributed to the well-being of military families. While serving as a school psychologist in 2006, Rebecca recognized a gap in civilian mental health services for members returning from war. She responded by creating the non-profit SAFE: Soldiers and Families Embraced. In 2007, Rebecca enlisted other mental health professionals to provide free counseling and other services to active duty soldiers, veterans and their families. She has continued educating herself through the Department of Defenses Center for Deployment Psychology, coupled with her experience as a Senior Licensed Psychological Examiner, Licensed Professional Counselor and TN Supreme Court Family Mediator. Rebecca created "Stand in Their Boots" to work directly with other professionals by providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and sacrifices inherent of our military culture.
